National Benchmark Test (NBT) 2026 Guide
What is the NBT?
The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is a standardised assessment used by South African universities to gauge academic readiness for higher education. When applying to a higher learning institution, certain programmes require NBT scores as part of the admission requirements.
According to the NBT Project, the assessment aims to:
- Assess entry-level academic and quantitative literacy and mathematics proficiency
- Evaluate the relationship between higher education entry-level proficiencies and school-level exit outcomes
- Provide institutions with additional information to assist in placing students in appropriate curricular routes
2026 NBT Test Dates and Deadlines
The NBT offers both paper-based and online tests throughout the year. Here are key dates for 2026:
Results are typically sent to institutions within 3-4 weeks of the test date. For the full calendar and venue information, visit www.nbt.ac.za.
NBT Fees for 2026
The current NBT fee is approximately R350 for the combined AQL and MAT tests. Payment must be made by the deadline (typically one week after registration closes). Book early to secure your preferred date and venue.
Registration Requirements
To register at nbtests.uct.ac.za, you need:
- South African Identity Document or foreign passport
- Valid email address
- Your city/location preference
- Name of prospective higher learning institution
- Your preferred assessment date
Test Types
There are two NBT tests:
AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy) – A multiple-choice test assessing your ability to interpret charts, graphs, tables, and engage with academic content. Duration: 3 hours.
MAT (Mathematics Test) – Tests mathematical concepts from the secondary school curriculum. Duration: 3 hours.
Most programmes requiring NBT scores need both tests. Check your prospective institution's specific requirements.
Test Day Requirements
For paper-based tests, arrive at the writing centre by 7:30 am. Doors close at 8:30 am – no late entry is permitted. AQL is written in the morning, MAT in the afternoon.
You must bring:
- Valid South African ID, foreign passport, OR birth certificate with police affidavit and recent photograph
- Pencils and an eraser

💡 Pro Tip: Book your NBT before your trial exams (around May-June) to get results in time for early university applications. Many institutions close applications by September!
Rewriting the NBT
You may rewrite the NBT to improve your scores. However:
- There must be at least 6 weeks between writing sessions
- Not all institutions accept rewrite scores – check with your prospective university
- Additional fees apply for each sitting
